Linguistic Interpretation of Discourse/ Narrative

The discourse analysis of a text from the literary critique point of view incorporates the meaning in the text, inter-textuality, embedded metaphorical sense, use of symbols to denote myths or an image in an exaggerated or in extraordinary manner. The discourse analyses also refers to the backdrop, the culture, context and comprehension of the societal interest viz-a-viz past and present society, social attributes, conditions and norms. In a way discourse analysis of the text recreates the image of the writing imagined by the writer as well as it constructs new thought for the reader, by the reader and of the reader to reimagine the situation, context and culture as per his cognition. But when we do the linguistic interpretation of a narrative indeed the focus lies on the words/vocabulary i.e. signifier and the signified. The words become the object of scrutiny in the contemporary context and comprehension first of all; secondly the words delineate their identity in terms of the syntax and semantics as well as in relation to phonetics and morphology. The linguistic interpretation lets the readers to enter in the applied linguistic space wherein each word adheres to its significance as regards the sociology, psychology and stylistics. Therefore whenever a narrative piece is picked up in ELT classroom the linguistic variations baffle the learner and the teacher both. The former gets stuck up in the whirlpool of words for deciphering and the latter falls into the trap how to help students to disseminate. The teacher thus requires to be aware of the assessment techniques of analysing, interpreting, inferring and evaluating the content of the reading passage herself first of all, secondly the teacher needs to aim to plan a blueprint of activities for the development of skills out of the reading passage. Herein how far the webskills can create non-conventional pattern in the guidance of the teacher is the question to meditate upon. With best wishes to all

Food for Taste or Thought - Delicious.com

Webskills 2012: Hello to everybody!: Hello to everybody, Please let me use this first opportunity to say hello and to state how excited I am to be part of this. I hope we are...

Dear Jasmina

We have learnt to step the ladder of web-interaction with the help of each other, point is the ladder of web exploration has unleashed the probable and improbable opportunities for us. Our dear instructor Ms. Courtney Cunningham has told us to search delicious.com. Do you think we are going to get from this site the food for thought or food for pedagogic exercises in ELT. Hope you might have been faster to search this engine, although one of our classmates Mahesh Dey has already been through it, but he has not given any clue about its utility and implications.

Rest later in my next letter to you. With best wishes

Language teacher - EFL/ESL Xtian's Corner

Dear Ina
I have finally step myself before the Saturday PST of Oregon Clock says that that week @ assignments is over, I have caught your blogger to stay connect with you directly. I am glad that you have in our classroom who has immense passion to throw new light on the areas of ABCD model of Bloom's Taxonomy and to suggest stimulative ideas for setting lesson-plans. The perspective of language teacher education in contemporary classroom is comparatively much difficult to prepare lessons plans because today the learner is far richer in the knowledge about social milieu through new media and media literacy. Similarly the instructor is to play the role of mediator rather as teacher or as the supervisor rather as the philosopher to instill problem solving outlook among the learners, as the present age is more scientific, technical, informative and communicative. Therefore the perception towards language teacher education is to be reformulated and redesigned in order to bring not only the autonomy in learners’ engagement to the text and context in the classroom. I hope will add more light to it in your further discussions.
 Best wishes

Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications

The Relevance of Multiple Intelligence Theory to Narrative Performance: A Study of Iranian Undergraduates of English Abdullah Sarani, Atefeh Keshavarz, Enayatollah Zamanpour.English Language and Literature Studies. Vol.2, No.3 (September)2012. In this paper the author aims to investigate the relationship in the five components content, coherence, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics that are used as source to enhance narrative writing and he opine that students' multiple intelligence is to be considered superior than to mere use of linguistic logical intelligence.

Pragmatics in ELT Pedagogy

http://calper.la.psu.edu/profdev.php?page=webinars   The Center for Advanced Language Proficiency Education and Research (CALPER) at the Pennsylvania State University is one of fifteen Title VI Language Resource Centers (LRCs) in the United States which are funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

CALPER's particular focus is to improve the environment of advanced-level foreign language teaching and learning, and assessment.

 Dear Sankarakumar

I found interesting your plan and presentation of the technology of teaching. It is indeed very clean and clear blueprint who will do what and how it would be applied and what would be its outcome in class. Yet Sankarakumar I am slightly skeptical about Blooms taxonomy when in reality we decide the pragmatic pedagogy to train ELTs or ElT students. If you could just take one frame of your whole blueprint of lesson plan i.e. "Introduction to Communication" then we would like to have from you how you have set this frame into small segments for discourse and to be interactive with students and finally inserting in it the Webskills, because when we frame small units of one of the sub-frames then it also stimulates teacher/supervisor/ program planner/teacher as co-learner to enrich himself first how he would respond to his own thought -process while planning his little units of communication in the class. I request you to first decide your action plan for each sub-frame and then your response to your steps will disseminate the learning skills on the part of the learner. I hope I may have made you understand the reality of pragmatics in the ELT pedagogy as well as heuristics of language application skills.

 With regards

Dr. Jayshree Singh

Emerging Frontiers in ELT - Web & Television

The present programme on television KAUN BANEGA KAROREPATI, led by the great millennium artist Amitabh Bacchan, conceptualizes the practice and performance of language through the use of cooperative learning strategies, peer tutoring, and increasing meaningful access through comprehensible input i.e. written texts with texts on recorded media – whether audio or video. It focuses on the preservation of culture, identity and mother tongue but at the same time it has developed universal auxiliary language that can be understood in the farthest locations of multi-cultural India. The KBC programme makes a judicious use of web-based learning through KBC web-game and through this internet-based learning it includes the use of social networking sites, email, chat-boxes, web-browser and podcasts. Similarly the artist Amitabh Bacchan is not only seem to be well-conversed with language proficiency as a teacher but he seems to be very much concerned with cross-culture requirements of multi-lingual nation India. If we perceive Amitabh Bacchan as the E-tutor in this programme, he provides the language driven, diagonistic based instruction that focus on individualized instruction through multi-media and online classroom, where we see the audience respond to his dedicated session of KBC and he also effectively plays the role of a citizen, a stakeholder, an employee who guarantees the completion of programme with better TRP rates day by day just like the E-Age Excellence Programmes.

ELT Survival Kit

Ecstasy in ELT and the Webskills

Dear All It is a matter of great pleasure to hear from you all. At the initial level of any course we are being taught as trainers to prepare an action plan along with objectives in order to predetermine what course of action and thought process as a trainer in ELT we need to fix our mind upon. According to me some of the significants motives must be: OBJECTIVES - To know about your inner dilemmas. - To know ones' attributes that confirms how much we are dynamic and hard-worker to feel and accept the change. - to excavate the inner strengths quickly. To display our thought process in demanding and in eye-catching attention even though it reflects our simplicity or ignorance of our expression. - To solve the intricacies of exploring web-possibilities for the interaction purpose - To prepare new models for ELTs is no doubt interesting and intuitive but these ideas do need lot of reorientation as regards computer and internet being used for learning webskills. ACTION-PLAN - To be spontaneous in drawing the steps for lesson plans are : - An Indian poet's collection of poems may be used for pedagogic study as regards ELT studies. Generally poems give lot of information such as -backdrop, history, social conditions, psychology, the kind of people or characters, geographic locations, besides linguistic variations consisting in it. Then other exercises can be planned out as regards the comparative study in the poems of the same poet. - Suppose a film song is to be used for ELT class then I have added a link in this post and the steps to use it in the lesson plan would be - -To talk about its backdrop -To portray the character in the ambiance around him - To understand the significance of this composition in the story-plot - To derive psychological vision of the filmmaker - To study the cinematic art and aesthetics in this song - To compare with any other contemporary film's location or context PEDAGOGIC CULTURAL & CONTEXT IN ELT CLASSROOMS Non - Native Speakers of EFL Every learner has its own culture which he carries into the language learning classroom and teacher has its own cultural background because of his experience, language education and knowledge or because of his being migrant to the other place from his native place, so his teaching process may vary with the language-performers and language –learners. Learner has the knowledge of his mother tongue and his culture when he comes to learn the target language or second language, which is English. It is important to note that English language has its own entity and learning process. Experts of EFL and in ELT for ELF Similarly teacher is supposed to adopt such strategic pedagogic interventions so that students become familiar with the second language with ease and comfort, and the acquisition process turns into a coordinated and cooperative learning. Effective learning can take place only when amalgamation is established between the first language and the second language. Collaborative and cooperative learning process should be emphasized so that the learner becomes more and more interactive and he develops his productive and receptive skills. With this view in mind I would go ahead with the planning of my project, so that it may suit to the conditions and needs of the two points at the center - one is the learner and the other is the teacher. Discussion on the first step of choosing the project title

Dear Ashish
It is a matter of great pleasure to hear from you and to know about your inner dilemmas. You have certainly an attributes that confirms that you are dynamic, hard-worker but at the same slow like basic html to excavate the inner strengths quickly. Your blog is absolutely demanding and catches attention even though it reflects your simplicity of your expression.

I would suggest that why do not you take an Indian poet's collection of poems to make a pedagogic study as ELT. Generally poems give lot of information such as -backdrop, history, social conditions, psychology, the kind of people or characters, geographic locations, besides linguistic variations consisting in it. Then other exercises can be planned out in your project as regards the comparative study in the poems of the same poet. Because in English Literature Honours we do study at least two-three poems of a poet in the syllabus of the paper.
Hope you will suggest me too on my topic of the project - "ENCOUNTERING TRADITION IN LEARNERS' ENGAGEMENT" - It's public view URL is attached here - http://www.noodletools.com/public/121010123651478623994229

Verbal Culture of EFL with ELF in ELT

The world over where there was and there are commonwealth of nations, the English language has become the medium of deconstructing and demystifying the statuettes of eastern and western enigma and at the operational level there have been efforts to combine lingual mobility with social mobility, so that mobilization of non-native speakers of EFL may be achieved through assimilation, immersion and sheltered process. Deciphering the EFL through ELF has opened avenues to disseminate information, sound system of language, structural aspects via internet and computer. Therefore web-skills, webinars and webpages are unraveling the trajectory of cross-cultural peripheries both for native and non-native speakers of EFL and these are shaping the programs and methods of ELT to create English for Lingua Franca all across the globe. The aim is to bring in close circuit the speakers of EFL with their expanded circles by way of non-conventional and virtual techniques of web-network system.

Building Teaching Skills through Interactive Web

One of the most difficult path to create webpage or website of one's own is as hard as to search one's direction in the untrodden paths for a layman in the techno-savvy world of information and technology. I have been through this task indeed with the help of my talented companion, my daughter 'Aishwarya Singh' (class XI student). The full marks to join with you all are deserved by her. I could reach to the page of bloggers and could settle down to frame my blogspot, but then I felt so exhaustive to design the blogpage that I had to resort to assistance, I have my facebook account and I have my two email accounts, I can upload and download but to design the blog and to be interactive in this way is absolutely a new venture in the world of cyber for me.

With Family
I have been very happy  to accompany you all to learn and to experience the art of being creative on the web and net. It has been very innovative indeed to set compatibility with the system of teaching set by Oregon University. I am very inquisitive how far I will find comfort and how much this course will keep me desperate and how many times I will remain on my toes to cross the bridge of Webskills in ELT.
